Historic District Designation Set for Friday, May 2

Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown and state Secretary of Transportation John Porcari will be on hand as the first historic district in Northern Anne Arundel County listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Linthicum Heights Historic District, is formally dedicated during a ceremony at the historic Linthicum Heights Train Station (c.1907) on Friday, May 2, 2008 at 2 p.m.

Petal Pusher is Latest Stop on Quilt Tour

The increasingly well-traveled Linthicum Centennial Quilt is currently making an appearance at the Petal Pusher florist shop at 607 South Camp Meade Road.  While this patchwork Centennial celebrity is not taking autographs, the Centennial committee is selling tickets for a chance to win it.  The quilt will be on display at Petal Pusher through April 27, the day of the Centennial Historic House Tour.  On that day it will be shown at the Woman's Club of Linthicum Heights clubhouse on Hammonds Ferry Road.  You can buy raffle tickets at Petal Pusher through April 27, and at the clubhouse on the 27th.  Tickets are $1 each or six for $5.

Quilt Conjures Memories for Baltimore Writer

The stitchings in the Linthicum Centennial quilt have touched a few people since Irma Eastland and her husband, Frank, put the finishing touches on it earlier this year.  Add another name to the list:  Rafael Alvarez, a Baltimore-born, Linthicum-reared journalist, author and television producer and writer, waxes nostaligic over the memories evoked by the quilt in a story published in the Baltimore Examiner on April 11.  Alvarez, who shuttles between Baltimore and Los Angeles, has written for Homicide: Life on the Street and HBO's hit drama, The Wire, and grew up on Orchard Road.

Limited Tickets Still Available for Historic House Tour

One hundred years ago a sleepy little agricultural village became Linthicum when the Baltimore and Annapolis Short Line Railroad laid its tracks through farmland owned by the Linthicum family. In June 1908, four Linthicum men formed the Linthicum Heights Company to develop part of their properties for residential use and the community of Linthicum was born. On Sunday, April 27 from 1 to 6 p.m. eight historic Linthicum homes will be opened and welcoming visitors during the tour sponsored by the Linthicum Centennial Committee.

Prayer Breakfast Honorees Are Longtime Linthicumites

In keeping with its "100 years of Faith" theme for it 31st annual Prayer Breakfast, the GFWC Linthicum Heights Woman's Club chose three members of the two oldest congregations in Linthicum to be the Centennial honorees. Honored from the Linthicum Heights United Methodist Church were Margaret "Marge" Tydings and Dorothy Mellor, lifelong friends, and from St. John Lutheran Church, Henry J. Imwold.

Linthicum Celebrates 100 Years of Faith

They spoke nostalgically of the wooden frame building that once housed the St. John Lutheran Church.  And they spoke warmly of the regal stone church on Camp Meade Road that once was home to the Linthicum United Methodist Church.  And they spoke proudly of the faithful congregations of those and the many other  churches that have helped build the 100 years of faith in Linthicum.

When pastors and other representatives of all the churches in the Linthicum community gathered Wednesday, March 12, to participate in the annual Woman's Club of Linthicum Heights-sponsored Prayer Breakfast, it was to celebrate Linthicum's Centennial year and to honor the churches and congregations in town that helped make it so great.  All the representatives from Linthicum's churches are pictured below:

Centennial Quilt Roosts at Linthicum Library in February

The Linthicum Centennial Quilt will be on display during February at the Linthicum Public Library, Hammonds Ferry and Shipley Roads as part of the library's 50th anniversary celebration.  The quilt is the historic prize for the Linthicum community, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2008.  A raffle for the quilt is underway -- tickets will be sold throughout the Centennial year. The drawing for the winner will be at the Centennial Gala in November.

 

Sock Hop Gets Centennial Off with a Bang

More than 150 people filed into the Lindale Middle School cafeteria Jan. 12 for the inaugural event of the Linthicum Centennial year.  The crowd showed up dressed in 1950s-era garb, including greaser jackets, bobby socks and letterman sweaters.  It was the first in what will be more than a dozen events to celebrate Linthicum's 100th year as a community.  To view all the photos from the event, click here.

Sock Hop Leads Off Centennial Celebration

Leather jackets and poodle skirts will fill the cafeteria at Lindale Middle School on January 12, 2008, as the yearlong Linthicum Centennial Celebration kicks off with a Centennial Sock Hop.

The event runs from 6 to 10 p.m. at the school, 415 Andover Road, Linthicum. Party-goers can dance through the decades and take part in such favorites as the Charleston, Conga, Mashed Potato, Limbo, Chicken Dance, Electric Slide, and more.

There will be plenty of dance contests and snacks and beverages will be available. Traditional Sock Hop attire is encouraged.

The Sock Hop is the first of nearly a dozen events planned over the next year to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of Linthicum. Other events include the Centen nial Prayer Breakfast sponsored by the Woman’s Club of Linthicum Heights in March, a historic homes tour in April, and the historic district dedication in May.

Tickets to the Sock Hop are $5 each, with a maximum of $20 per family. Tickets are available at Charlene’s Hallmark, 513 S. Camp Meade Road in Linthicum, or by calling 410-850-4058.

Centennial Committee Sets Event Dates

One hundred years ago a sleepy little agricultural village became our town. When the tracks of the Baltimore and Annapolis Short Line Railroad were laid through the farmland owned by the Linthicum family, an opportunity emerged. Four young men in that family, George Milton, Wade Hampton, Seth Hance and J. Charles were all professional businessmen—doctors, lawyers and business owners, and owned a majority of the property in the area that comprised our town.  In June of 1908 they formed the Linthicum Heights Company to develop a portion of their properties for residential use and the community of Linthicum was born.
